Walsh, Gurney carry Tridents to playoffs

Sports Desk:

Barbados Tridents sealed a spot in the playoffs as they trounced St Lucia Zouks by 24 runs in front of their home fans on Sunday (September 30). The visitors were 111 for 5 at one stage in chase of 141 but Hayden Walsh inspired a collapse as they folded for 117.

They seemed to be going fairly well till the tenth over before Colin de Grandhomme fell for 21 with 84 on the board. Hardus Viljoen and Christopher Barnwell carried the chase forward by adding 27 for the fifth wicket. It was Harry Gurney who landed the body blow with the wicket of Viljoen. Daren Sammy, Krishmar Santokie and Fawad Ahmed then became victims to Walsh as the pacer ended with figures of 3.4-0-26-4 while Gurney bagged 3 for 17.

Earlier, Johnson Charles set up a challenging total for the visitors as he struck a 36-ball 47 after Tridents opted to bat. There were handy contributions from Shakib Al Hasan (22) and Justin Greaves (27 not out) but Zouks managed to keep things in check with regular wickets. Ashley Nurse pushed the total past 140 with a six which proved to be more than enough for the side to seal an easy win.

Brief scores: Barbados Tridens 141/6 in 20 overs (Johnson Charles 47; Krishmar Santokie 2-25) beat St Lucia Zouks 117 in 18..4 overs (Hayden Walsh 4-26, Harry Gurney 3-17) by 24 runs.
